insherah qazi is one of our brightest and most involved students at agnes scott college. she was elected president of her class in her first year and represents her class again this year as sophomore class president. insherah is a passionate leader working toward the elimination of gun violence in and around her community. she was the only first-year student from agnes scott to attend the spring lobby weekend on violence interruption with the friends committee on national legislation, where she learned how to speak with senators and representatives. she has since written a student government association resolution titled agnes scott college student government association resolution for prohibiting agnes scott from investing endowment funds in the gun industry and started a chapter of students demand action on agnes scott’s campus. students demand action is a young activist group committed to ending gun violence.
personal statement
growing up in the south wasn't easy for me. there were always shootings happening, and i never felt safe, especially because i stood out with my hijab and south asian looks. going to school was scary, and sometimes gunshots would even interrupt our classes. i believe that everyone should feel safe in their communities and schools, so i decided to do something about it. with my friends from school, we started a group called students demand action. our goal was simple: to stop gun violence in our community. we talked to people in our community about how to keep guns safe and why voting matters. we also spoke up for new laws that could make our neighborhoods safer. it wasn't just me – we all worked together to make a change. now, i'm part of the national advisory board for students demand action. i'm still working hard to make sure our communities are safe for everyone. i've learned that when we all come together, we can make a big difference. gun violence is a big problem, but i'm determined to find solutions and make our neighborhoods better places to live.
